A Life Well Loved: Why Senior Dog Portraits Are the Gift You'll Treasure Forever
A Life Well Loved: Why Senior Dog Portraits Are the Gift You'll Treasure Forever
By Stephanie Blum Photography | Mendham, NJ | Pet Photography | Senior Dog Portraits
There is a portrait hanging in my hallway.
It's of Winnie — my 14-year-old pittie — and every single day, sometimes more than once, I stop in front of it. I look at her face. And for just a moment, she's right there with me.
I said goodbye to Winnie in February. Grief does strange and tender things to you. But in the weeks after losing her, I kept returning to that portrait, and I realized something: it is one of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself.
That hallway moment is why A Life Well Loved: Senior Dog Portraits exists.
Celebrating the Grey Muzzle: Why Senior Dogs Deserve Fine Art Portraits
If you share your home with a senior dog, you already know. You know the way they've slowed down on walks but haven't slowed down on love. You know that grey muzzle — the one that appeared seemingly overnight — has become one of your favorite things about them. You probably find yourself photographing them more than ever lately, trying to capture something you're afraid of losing.
Phone photos are precious. But they live in a camera roll, buried under thousands of other moments, rarely seen and never truly celebrated.
Senior dogs deserve more than that.
As a pet photographer based in Mendham, NJ, I specialize in fine art dog portraits for families throughout Morris County and the surrounding New Jersey communities. And I believe — deeply, from experience — that a beautifully crafted portrait of your dog on your wall is something you will walk past every morning and feel a rush of love for the rest of your life. Something to hold onto long after the leash is hung up for the last time.
Introducing A Life Well Loved: Senior Dog Portraits
This is a limited edition fine art portrait campaign — a curated photography project celebrating the beautiful, soul-filled faces of senior dogs. It's a gallery exhibition. It's a love letter to the dogs who have given us everything.
Applications are now open for 20 dogs.
Each participating dog will be photographed in my signature fine art painterly style and featured on a 16×20 framed canvas as part of a cohesive gallery-style exhibit. This is not a standard pet photo session. This is a curated project designed to feel timeless, elevated, and deeply personal — a true work of art that belongs on your wall.
This Project Is for You If…
You might be wondering whether this is the right fit. Here's what I know about the families who belong in this project:
You've been photographing your dog more than ever lately. You want something better than a phone photo sitting unprinted on your phone. Their grey muzzle is one of your favorite things about them. You've already thought — even briefly, even painfully — about what life will look like without them. You want to be part of something meaningful that celebrates dogs like yours. And maybe, if you're honest with yourself, you've been waiting for the "right time."
There is no right time. There is only now, while they're here, while you can still look into those eyes and feel everything.
This project is open to senior dogs age 7 and up.

Fine Art Pet Photography in Mendham, NJ — What Makes This Different
There are plenty of options for pet photos in New Jersey. What sets Stephanie Blum Photography apart is the intentionality behind every image.
My work is rooted in a fine art painterly aesthetic — soft, luminous, emotionally resonant. I don't just take pictures of dogs. I make portraits that capture who they are: the warmth in their eyes, the wisdom that comes with age, the particular way your dog looks at you like you are their entire world.
Senior dogs, in particular, have a depth and stillness that photographs beautifully. They are patient. They are present. And when the lighting is right and the moment is quiet, they reveal something extraordinary.
Families throughout Mendham, Chester, Bedminster, Far Hills, Peapack, Madison, and the greater Morris County area have trusted me to photograph the dogs they love most. I understand what's at stake in these sessions, because I've lived it myself.
How to Apply for A Life Well Loved
This campaign is limited to 20 dogs. Once those spots are filled, the project closes.
If your senior dog is 7 years or older and you've felt even a flicker of recognition reading this — that feeling that time is moving faster than you'd like — I'd love to hear about them.

For Winnie. And for Your Dog Too.
Winnie gave me 14 years of unconditional love, ridiculous joy, and the kind of steadfast companionship that reshapes who you are as a person. She deserved to be immortalized. She deserved to hang in my hallway, to be seen and remembered every single day.
So does your dog.
A Life Well Loved: Senior Dog Portraits is my way of making sure that more senior dogs — and more grieving, loving, devoted dog parents — have what I have. A portrait. A moment preserved. A piece of art that says: this life was well loved.
